The sounds of the park had vanished with the going of the sun as it fell behind the horizon to rest, letting darkness engulf the town, and causing the automatic street lanterns to flicker to life. Kiku kicked the dirt at her feet, scuffing up her already worn converses as she pushed herself around on the swing. The sounds of laughing children, and the chatter of adults was replaced with the occasional car racing down the street near by, and the slow creeeak-ing sound of the swing chains. The wind blew past every now and then, pushing the other swings into motion, as if ghosts of children from another life were now able to come out and play. Kiku smiled, she could almost see the dead children swinging, playing tag, and pushing each other down the slides. Odd, other worldly things like ghosts never bothered Kiku; whenever her parents used to read her bed time stories with ghosts in them, Kiku was never scared, but looked at them from a different perspective.
One time when some of the older kids in her elementary school was telling ghost stories to try to scare the little kids, they told them of a crazy ghost that wandered the school with an ax to kill all the children who stayed out too late. Little second grader Kiku had chirped up however, ;"Well why does he carry a ax? Wouldn't a gun be better, or maybe a sword! And why wait for night? He could just come into the classroom and kill everyone there. And why stop at children? He could kill all the teachers too." She had said, causing the upper classmen to stop and stare for several moments in horror at the little, morbid girl, who just smiled innocently. Kiku laughed at the memory. She was never that afraid of things like that, more so she was intrigued by them, searching for different meanings and reasons behind them. Kiku shook her head, pulling herself from her thoughts, "Man, I was such a weird kid..." Kiku mumbled, pushing herself once more around on the swing, before heaving a sigh and staring at her darkened surroundings, watching the flicker of street lamp dully.
